Hired to find Veronica, Spinoza won’t let his personal demons―or demons of any kind―get in the way of finding the truth about the missing girl. Now following a bizarre set of clues that leads him into stranger and stranger territory, Spinoza is about to come face-to-face with something legendary... and something hungry for blood.

THE VAMPIRE WHO PLAYED DEAD (Book 2)

Two years ago, a woman is murdered in cold blood. Now a son she’d given up for adoption returns to claim his inheritance. To verify his claim, a DNA test is ordered. Except there’s one problem. A world inhabited by the living and the dead.

THE VAMPIRE IN THE IRON MASK (Book 3)

In this third and final Spinoza mystery, a worker at a popular medieval dinner theater hires Spinoza to find out the identity of one of his co-workers, a co-worker who’s never been seen without an iron mask... and who just might be a real prisoner. Spinoza’s new client hints that the man in the iron mask is being held without his consent in the bowels of the dinner theater, a forbidden area for the other employees. When Spinoza attends Medievaland, posing as a guest, he doesn’t count on bumping into someone from a previous case, nor can he ever forget what he finds when his investigation takes him past his own life tragedy and brings him face-to-face with the vampire imprisoned in the iron mask. But is the vampire someone he should rescue, or fear?

BONUS: THE VAMPIRE ON THE TRAIN (Short Story)

I really like these books. They had great characters and the story was full of action and kept you reading once you started them. I like the fact that he is similar to Colombo in the fact that he seems in over his head but always finds a way to pull it off and do what needs to be done.

The only criticism I have is that the stories were over too quickly. The lead character, Spinoza, is easy to like and the stories are a great read. A different twist on vampire tales!

I listened 🎶 to these three will written paranormal fantasy world 🌎 haunting horror vampire adventure thriller novels individually. Each story is different with interesting well developed characters lots of action, misdirection, and violence leading to each unexpected conclusion. I would recommend this series and various authors to readers of paranormal fantasy adventure mystery novels 👍🔰. 2023 😀👒☺

I was intrigued by the titles, then read the Samantha Moon novel featuring Spinoza and had to read the series. Such a tragic loss that changes his life in so many ways! It was gratifying to see Natassa ease his burden at the end of this trilogy. Looking forward to reading more about her and Veronica in the Huntress series.

Definitely entertaining and not what you might think from the teasers given. Great ending in the final book that makes one wish for future books with Spinoza. Love the way J. R. Rain can link characters from other books he has written to these books. If you haven't checked out the Knighthorse books, Samantha Moon, or Elvis, do so and you will get the references so much more readily but in the meantime it will not detract from these books.

I enjoyed this series very much. J.R. Rain has a way with making you care about his characters and Spinoza is one of my favorites. I was a little disappointed that the books were so short, but each book was done very well.

I loved this trilogy! Spinoza is an interesting and deep character with his past history. We definitely need to see more of Spinoza with Veronica and the addition of Samantha! What a team they would make

This trilogy of novellas was in a word....interesting. Each storyline was truly a progression from the first. Because they were novellas I cannot say I felt the character was fleshed out very well it felt more like introductions to them and perhaps and introduction to the main character. At first I even got to the point that the author caused me to not like him very much.

He was hurting but by the third installment I was ready to say "get over it already." But, there was a point to it. I won't say what for that would give too much of the plot line and it is an important one. Perhaps the author could have found another way to bring this about. I never did like being hit over the head or slapped in the face with a plot point. I am pretty quick with these things truly I am. Trust your readers to pick up the points you want to make about a character and what is going on with them.

As for the stories themselves I loved the plots. I loved the darkness of them and how the detective got introduced into a part of life that most believed to be just a goth thing, or a story in a book. I may try more books from this author, I am not closed minded and judge just from a few novellas. He has at least peeked my interest. I just could not give a higher marking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not as much about Vampires
Reviewed in Canada on August 17, 2016
I enjoyed these books, and was sad when I finished them. However, if you are looking for a lot of Vampires, these don't have as much as you would expect by the titles. It was more so about the main character, Spinoza. He is very likeable, though he is way too hard on himself. No spoiler, but I was glad of the way the ending was done. So if you are wanting just a good set of books to keep your interest, with maybe a smattering of some vampiric stuff thrown in, this set will be that for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Detektivgeschichten mal anders
Reviewed in Germany on June 9, 2014

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable detective/vampire collection

Another nice series of books from this author. In a way I found this to have a similar format to the Knighthorse series, though the main character is very different. Comparisons to this series is no bad thing as both are hugely enjoyable. Each book is extremely short, so you will have no trouble reading each in one sitting.

The author throws a lot of humour, sarcasm, emotion at this book which makes it a very enjoyable reading experience. I bought this whilst it was free, but still worth the couple of quid for an entertaining 'Buffy' meets 'Columbo' type of book.

(N.B. The only other review at my time of writing has offered 2*, despite them not reading one iota of these books. I'll let you make your own mind up about that)
